Museums are powerful bridges in our societies. As trusted public spaces and vital parts of our shared social fabric, they foster dialogue, understanding, and connection across cultures, generations, and borders—especially in times of division.
Since 2020, International Museum Day has supported a set of @unitednations Sustainable Development Goals. Museums contribute in many ways, from promoting inclusion and accessibility to encouraging collaboration and peacebuilding.
In 2026, we highlight these three key SDGs:
Goal 10 – Reduced inequalities
Goal 16 – Peace, justice, and strong institutions
Goal 17 – Partnerships for the goals
On 18 May, we invite museums, museum professionals, visitors, and supporters to come together and harness the power of museums to bridge divides, strengthen communities, and inspire positive change worldwide.
Get involved by organising activities, building partnerships, and sharing your events to connect with the global museum community.
This year’s theme also celebrates ICOM’s 80th anniversary, marking decades of international collaboration and commitment to museums and society.
